Paving - Surface treatment

Netherlands, Siegerswoude

Challenge

Cracking in asphalt pavements is one of the biggest problems faced for regional and secondary roads. Surface dressing is a well known technique for restoring texture depth and sealing the road surface to inhibit the ingress of water. Bituminous overlays consisting of chip sealing and TenCate Polyfelt PGM 14 are a cost effective proven approach for extending the life of pavements. When placed in bituminous bound layers PGM 14 retards the initiation and propagation of reflective cracking which would lead to premature pavement failure.

SOLUTION

Together with our partner ESHA Infrasolutions TenCate was able to supply the ideal solution for the needs of the community of Dongeradeel (NL). The existing roads consisted of 80mm cracked asphalt on a foundation consisting of rough gravel (breakstone). The profile of the road was good with minimal rutting. Aged bitumen ensure a crackled surface so that water could penetrate into the road construction. The ideal situation for the application of PGM14 combined with polymer modified bitumen.Installation of the 3.000 m2 PGM14 was done within a few hours, so that the whole job, including double surfacetreatment, was arranged within 1 day.

Benefits of Using Paving Fabrics in Surface Dressing:

The bitumen impregnated fabric becomes an integral part of the road structure by forming a SAMI absorbing stresses to reduce reflective and fatigue cracking of the asphalt or concrete surface. It also forms a barrier to surface water ingress helping to maintain the pavement’s structural strength.

  • Whole life maintenance cost reduction
  • Significant extension of road service life
  • Extension of area which can receive surface dressing avoiding the need for inlay construction
  • Can avoid expensive pre-patching
  • Reduced environmental impact associated with longer maintenance intervals
  • Eliminate future crack filling or sealing
  • Prevent surface water ingress
  • Allow wet subgrades to regain strength and load carrying capacity
  • Protect the underlying pavement from ageing, oxidation and traffic wear
